Building on our successful on-going collaboration with the Ucross Foundation, we are delighted to announce three pilot programs that will enable us to recognize a larger number of the talented and committed Alpert Award nominees. With the generosity of Hedgebrook, The MacDowell Colony, and Ragdale (as with Ucross), each artist chosen for a residency prize will be awarded both a one-month stay and transportation stipend funded by the respective colony.

— awarded to a woman playwright —

Hedgebrook, a non-profit organization inspiring women to author change, runs a retreat for women writers on Whidbey Island, an hour north of Seattle. The retreat is known for the talent and mix of its artists, charming individual wood frame cottages, and time in which to write, as well as take part in a small vital community. With days free, the six writers-in-residence at the same time join one another for the communal dinner in the farmhouse dining room.

Hedgebrook invests in women who write by providing them with the space and time to create significant work in solitude and community, and by developing an international network to connect writers and audiences.

The Alpert/Ucross Residency Prize, now in its fifth year, is a collaboration between the Ucross Foundation of Wyoming, an artists’ colony located on a 22,000-acre working cattle ranch, and the Alpert Award. It reflects the desire of both organizations to support the individual creative spirit and the process by which dedicated artists deepen their work. Alpert Music and Visual Arts panels* each select three people.
